Beyond Elvis' Memphis

As author of the revered Narnia chronicles, C.S. Lewis is a literary legend. But the story of how this one-time atheist became an influential voice in modern Christianity is as fascinating as his fantasy world of lions, witches and wardrobes. Initially seen as a failure by friend J.R.R. Tolkien, Lewis's Narnia novels went on to sell millions of copies. This documentary traces the author's spiritual journey and the literary legacy he left behind.

This documentary details the life and crimes of Ilse Koch, the Nazi woman who became notorious for her monstrous crimes against the prisoners of Buchenwald concentration camp, where her husband was a commander. Accused of embezzlement by her fellow Nazis during the war, Koch faced charges brought by three separate tribunals -- and grisly accusations that she collected the tattooed skin of murdered inmates.

Terry Jones (of Monty Python) gives a narrative of the life of and society around Geoffrey Chaucer. Geoffrey Chaucer's life to middle age, He survived the Black Death as a child, and become actively involved in the 100 Years War, the war that was to leave England devastated. Despite all these catastrophes, English literature went though a short Renaissance, and the program considers the leading role that Chaucer was to play in it.

"Alice: A Look Into Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and at the Curious Relationship Between Alice Liddell and Lewis Carroll" examines the coming together of the writer, Lewis Carroll, and the little girl named Alice who inspired him, the society they inhabited, their relationship that is still the subject of much controversy, and the effect it had on their subsequent lives.

From Austrian princess to ill-fated last queen of France, Marie Antoinette's life journey is captured in this meticulously researched documentary about the woman who is considered to have triggered the French Revolution for her lavish lifestyle. Vilified for extravagant tastes that epitomized the wanton excess of the French aristocracy, the young queen found herself caught in a political firestorm, doomed no matter what course she followed.

Sherlock Holmes, the fictional detective created by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featured in four novels and 56 short stories first published in 1887. Most of these adventures featured the city of London. In this brand new program, we visit the London locations of the Sherlock stories that helped to bring the "consulting detective" to life.
