Sounds From Beneath

A wry interweave film about baby making and how as time marches on the decision gets more intense and less romantic.

Back stroke butterfly, front crawl and bras, we are awash in an ocean of bubbles. Meanwhile Captain Ahab sets sail on his magic carpet in search of the whale. All is not well in the world but Eden is there, fresh from her garden, tuning into “The Far Away Land”. We are deep in the cloud of our own making but help is at hand, and everything might yet be alright.

Ted Hughes's 1993 novel The Iron Woman is the springboard for this multi-media project by Mikhail Karikis. The video section of the installation features seven-year-olds from Mayflower Primary School in East London discussing the novel's environmental themes.

The industrial noise of a factory in the Isle of Grain provides a percussive backbeat as a group of local children rap about their lives and play in the woods, sometimes wearing luminous tribal masks.
