Maija is married off to her neighbors son Janne, and the Newlywed couple moves to uninhabited island in Åland archipelago, middle of the Baltic Sea in the mid-19th century. Death, war and love makes her stronger than his opponent: the merciless North Sea.

Eddie and his little water turtle Maxon Jaxon travel to Lysekil to spend Christmas with Eddie’s aunt Soffan and uncle Malkolm. There, Eddie experiences new adventures, makes his first real friend, Johanna, and meets Nick at the House of the Sea along with Nick’s dog Betsy Aronson. But Eddie cannot play with Betsy because of his allergy to dogs.

A lock factory worker Pertti would like to marry his girlfriend Verna, but fears they don't have enough money. His brother Martti is a member of a youth gang that is planning a robbery with three other young men. It is in a battlefield in Karelia, Finland during the Continuation war (1941-1944). Intensive shooting between Finnish and Soviet troops takes place. The Soviet occupation is strong, and on the Finnish side it is ordered to withdraw. But Captain Viktor Aaltonen does not listen to the order but wants to shorten a wounded companion's suffering. Aaltonen is taken to the Soviet prison camp, Vorkuta, where he will spend a decade.

Writer and psychiatrist Oscar Parland (1912-1997) narrates this nostalgic story about his early childhood memories and fantasies. Five-year-old Riki spends the summer of 1917 at his cosmopolitan family's summer house by the Gulf of Finland. Surrounded by other children and eccentric adults who speak Swedish, German and Russian, Riki also encounters some fantastic animal characters no one else is able to see.
