A doctor marries his seemingly incurable patient to fulfill her last wish. A serum he develops saves her, and the union born of compassion develops into a loving marriage.

Young Olga Ahrendt almost succeeded in attempting suicide. After he has taken Olga Ahrendt to his hospital, he discovers during an examination that her suicide attempt is due to a serious physical illness. He intensively takes care of her without forgetting about his other patients, to whom he can give a new will to live, even if only through a small story. Young Prince Nechljudov is summoned as a judge in a murder trial. A rich merchant was found dead in the room of the inn where he was staying and the prostitute Maslova was accused of the crime. Nechljudov recognizes in the woman the maid of the aunts he had seduced and abandoned years before and tries to convince the authorities of her of his innocence but to no avail. Convinced that he is responsible for her moral fall, he follows her to Siberia where she must serve her sentence.

The attractive Oberleutnant Paul Wendlandt is stationed in North Africa as a fighter pilot. While in Berlin to deliver a report he is given a day's leave, and on the stage of the cabaret theatre "Skala" sees the popular Danish singer Hanna Holberg. For Paul it is love at first sight. When Hanna visits friends after the end of the performance, he follows her, and speaks to her in the U-Bahn. After the party in her friends' flat, he accompanies her home and chance throws them further together when an air raid warning forces them to take cover in the air raid shelter. Hanna reciprocates Paul's feelings, but after a night spent together Paul has to return immediately to the front. There now follows a whole series of misunderstandings, and one missed opportunity after another. While Hanna waits in vain for some sign of life from Paul, he is flying on missions in North Africa. When he tries to visit her in her Berlin flat, she is giving a Christmas concert in Paris.

A unlucky village railroader causes a trainwreck by accident. In court he is exculpated by a woman who first becomes his lover, later on his wife. But in the end, his guilt is too strong and he faces his due punishment.

Four graduates of an industrial design school team up and form a small business. The protagonist is so excited by the venture that she turns down the proposal of her dashing instructor. Time passes and her three partners lose interest in the business for different reasons. This leaves the heroine who has a change of heart and decides to forgo the business and marry the instructor after all.

After leaving his overbearing wife for another woman, a composer is suspected of her murder when she is found dead.

A drug-addicted ballerina seeks morphine during the Salzburg Festival, nearly ruining pharmacist Hans Falkner’s marriage to Anna. A doctor prescribes a lethal dose of morphine to the ballerina, but Anna, tempted to eliminate her rival, ultimately chooses morality and administers the correct dose.

The aging Dr. Johannes Jensen still cannot come to terms with the fact that his wife died in an avalanche during a mountain hike they took together twenty years ago. When a young couple plans to climb the same mountain, Jensen fears that the incident might repeat itself. He tries in vain to dissuade them from their plan. When they get into trouble, Jensen manages to save them, sacrificing his own life in the process.
