The Lull

An old, rusty freighter enters the harbor on the morning of December 24th. A board brings a clandestine passenger who tries, at night, to jump into the country.

Nights are hidden days beyond our minds. But some remain like flying shadows reshaping the naive images of our lives. Faces hurt with emptiness, characters petrified in silence, lands inked with blood....And we become sleepy, carelessly dying, until morning happens.

Portugal feels himself a little country in the tail of Europe. Has a wandering heart, an adventurous spirit, an embittered soul and an obedient body.

In the 40's, after the Spanish Civil War, many republicans defeated by the nationalist forces of Franco found refuge on the bordering mountains in the north of Portugal. Some saw them as brigands, others gave them shelter and helped them on the sly to police forces of Salazar. They were... the Outlaws.

From Regina's personal and visual memories, a tribute to her uncle Thomas, who was an artistic inspiration and played a key role in her becoming a filmmaker. A moving tribute to a poet of the everyday.

It's the story of a child and her mother, two lives that don't communicate with each other. Is that loneliness that sometimes reaches the size of the night. Dark is the night. Dark is the mother. And dark becomes the entire Universe when you are alone and abandoned.

In a rocky island exposed to the elements, a lighthouse keeper lives alone with his daughter. From the top of his tower, the father keeps vigil to the horizon line and for the safety of the passing sails. With no other company, the girl develops a unique complicity with the sea, which brings her toys in the shape of debris on the shore. Following the rhythm of the waves, these objects will unveil previous events, memories that the tide cannot erase.

A short musical film that uses an innovative technique of animated tiles, featuring a rebellious Mary joining her voice to those of celebrated women throughout history in the fight for equality.

There are many in-betweens in my film. The most relevant that are in the source material are essential to the film, they are their own Time and Space generators, they are what exists between each of the imagens.
