With rumors of unlimited rock and its position between Europe and Asia, Turkey is the perfect place to go looking for the next great climbing destination. In the spring of 2008, a group of climbers traveled there to investigate for themselves an area surrounding a village called Herakleia, on the shores of Bafa Lake in southwest Turkey. Nestled among 3000 year old ruins, meadows of flowers and olive trees lies what may be one of the greatest and largest undeveloped climbing areas on Earth. Rising out of the arid Mexican Desert lies a 900ft ship's prow of elegant limestone, sporting a 9-pitch 5.13 established in the 90s by Jeff Jackson. A cutting-edge Big Wall free climb at the time, this climb shut down hard men for years. Shrouded in mysticism, the bolts rusted and the holds collected dust, until a couple of gals from Canada decided to give it a try.

Among Mallorca's fragrant almond groves, famed nightclubs and speedo-sporting Eurotourists, limestone cliffs rise straight from the sea like sentinels, their steep pockets beckoning to climbers the world over. A fall means splashing into 80 degree water, drying off and trying again - from the bottom. Some call it climbing in its purest form. Others call it a hell of a way to spend a few weeks. Last season, a small group of climbers traveled to those sea cliffs to learn the intricacies of deep water soloing and to try, unrehearsed, some of the hardest - and most aesthetic - routes in the world.
