In the 1600s, Hungary is plundered by the Turks and the Laban. Kecskemét, the free royal city, is not exempt from this. Miska, the wily son of Lestyák, a master tailor, suggests to the town council that they should ask for a permanent beacon from Buda, thus protecting Kecskemét from the harassment of raiding troops. The town assembles its gift of jewellery, cloth and a beautiful girl, and Miska sets off for Buda. On the way, the young gypsy girl falls in love with Mishka, who elopes with her in a boy's dress. He can do this because instead of the bewitchment he hopes for, he is given only a fancy robe to protect the city. Little do they know at the time how much the robe is worth. Before its wearer, all true believers will crumble to dust and do his bidding.

On 26th of August 1939 the Ocania1 steamboat leaves the New York harbour with the ex-spy Maria Holm on board. Now she is the owner of a dressmaker's showroom, but for just one last time is taking important documents to Europe for the sake of peace.

Complications ensue when a U.S. diplomat discovers that he has a baby on his hands and an undercover gal in his arms.

During World War II Carlotta, the circus owner maintains herself, her lover and her rather run-down circus-team by illegal man-smuggling. In the year of 1944, besides the usual refugees, she even has to take Professor Máté, the renown mathematician to the Yugoslavian partisans. The team is joined by Carlotta's psychotic son who has escaped from an asylum.

Dr. Fritz Böhler is a prisoner of war doctor in the Soviet POW camp 5110/47 near Stalingrad. Despite the harshest conditions, he tries to help his fellow prisoners with the simplest means. But when his assistant Dr. Schultheiss falls in love with the Russian doctor Alexandra Kasalinskaja, Schultheiss not only endangers his own life - because Alexandra is the lover of First Lieutenant Markow.

dr. Benedek Gábor, a famous solicitor in Eger, is the defense counsel of a murderer, who killed his wife out of jealousy. Gábor lives in a happy marriage with Anna. One day, however, Szentgyörgyi Péter, a famous pianist, comes to Eger. He once was loved by Anna, who in those days was training to become an artist herself. Among them, Anna, a Yugoslav, who has seen her husband killed in Trieste by political enemies. She is pregnant and her one and only aim right now is her baby to be born. Janka, a beautiful Polish girl who has lost her mind, is reunited with the physician who sent her to a brothel for Nazi officers. As for Yvonne, a light-hearted French woman, she is prepared to do anything to leave the place, including to marry out with an Albanese ice cream man, despite his unappetizing looks. At least,she will stop being a woman without a name.
