La Grande Histoire de la Marine

Who invented time, who invented the clock? Why 1 hour, why 60 minutes, why 60 seconds? Since prehistoric times, man has sought to measure time, to organize social and religious life, to plan food supply... Today we can surf the Internet, geolocate, pay by credit card… All our daily lives depend on time and the synchronization of clocks. The history of the invention of time and of the ways and instruments to measure it is a long story…

April 14, 2017 marked the 105th anniversary of the most famous shipwreck in the world. It is still not finally clear why the White Star Line luxury liner sank in the North Atlantic on its maiden voyage. The documentary accompanies an expedition to the wreck of what was the largest ship in the world at the time.

On July 5, 1816, the raft of La Méduse, about 20 by 12 meters, began its slow drift. They left at 151 and 13 days later, after a hellish journey, arrived at 15... Who knows the true story of Le Radeau de La Méduse? Painted in 1819, Théodore Géricault's romantic masterpiece became so famous that it has since overshadowed the true story that inspired it. In June 1816, during the Restoration under Louix XVIII, a French ship, the Méduse, left the port of Rochefort bound for Senegal. Its crew, made up of the new governor Schamaltz, company officials, troops and the expeditionary corps, had to settle in this former colony restored to France by England. In all, some 400 passengers. But due to the unpredictable cartography of the time and the short-sightedness of its commander, La Méduse ran aground on a sandbank off the coast of Mauritania.

The fascinating landscape formations of Iceland in the North Atlantic bear witness to the beauty and primal power of nature. They were created through the interaction of powerful volcanic, geological and biological processes that have been changing the face of the earth for billions of years. This is what the Earth might have looked like four billion years ago. Iceland is the realm of ice and fire. Nowhere else is there such a high density of volcanoes. The landscapes, which are continually reshaped by eruptions, make the island a natural laboratory full of clues about the formation and development of the earth. The documentary follows a group of scientists through the most active areas of Iceland, along a mountain range that has emerged from the ocean. On the slopes of the volcanoes, in the fog of the fumaroles and on streams and rivers, the three researchers explore how the first forms of life populated the earth's surface and in what evolutionary steps they took over the earth.

Louis XIV's ship La Lune was wrecked off Toulon in November 1664. The ship was returning from an expedition to the Barbary Coast with nearly one thousand people on board, simple seamen or nobles of the highest rank. Discovered by a submarine in 1993, the wreck lies in 90 metres of water. In a state of magificent preservation, like some underwater Pompei, she will, starting in 2012, be the subject of an exceptional archeological investigation, bringing together history and robotics, the expertise of archeologists and the passion for the deep.

Whatever the circumstances, the place where they happen or the toll, all shipwrecks are tragic. However, some, for many reasons, go down in history and become veritable legends. In April 1912, while on its maiden voyage, the RMS Titanic hits an iceberg. Two hours and forty minutes later, the biggest and most luxurious liner of its age sinks.

Invisible but fundamental to life on the planet, wind has inspired many myths in human civilizations. A key player in oxygenating the oceans, it governs the movements of insect and bird populations, shapes the plant world, influences transportation, and is an inexhaustible source of energy. By turns devastating and beneficial, whether dry, violent, hot, cold, or humid, it lays down the law wherever it blows. There are thousands of them around the globe, each with its own characteristics. At the crossroads of geography, history, human adventure, and science, Grands Vents follows the path of five iconic winds—the Mistral of Provence, the Chinook of the Rockies, the transatlantic trade winds, the North African Sirocco, and the Indian monsoon—through the eyes of those who study them, await them, fear them, or even enjoy them.
