Reverence
In ancient Hawai'i, the sacred kuleana (responsibility) of hiding a chief's bones was given only to their most honored and trusted allies. Believed to hold the chief's mana (spiritual power), his 'iwi (bones) were entrusted to a guardian who traveled in secret.
