The Promise

Two husbands, Tatsuki and Yudai have been for many years. It is getting closer to the day that Yudai will say goodbye. Now, their memories are flashing.

Shuji and Yuri work at a signboard shop. Shuji carries Yuri on his back wherever he goes. That is how they have lived together. One morning, however, Yuri suddenly disappears. And the truth that comes to light.

The not-too-distant future. Humanity is dying out. One day, a man who collects junk meets a boy from the sea. In a world where no one can live without protective clothing, the boy is naked. The film depicts an encounter between the old humans and the new.

Shinichi admires Toru, a thinker, and frequently visits his home. The two live in harmony, spending their days together like brothers. However, their peaceful routine is disrupted when activists approach Toru, a public figure, attempting to exploit him for their own agenda. Despite Toru’s warnings, Shinichi becomes entangled in a suspicious situation and eventually seeks Toru’s help. Although Toru’s intervention seems to resolve the situation, both Toru and Shinichi subsequently disappear. Left behind, Toru’s wife and Shinichi’s sister are left in confusion and despair.

Hiroko accepts him unconditionally, but Keita struggles with whether he truly deserves to remain there and finds himself unable to move forward. One day, he discovers a newspaper help-wanted column and chooses a new path… Part III: “The Drowning Sailor” Keita and Shigeru spend time together before departure. Because of Keita’s irresponsible behavior, their plans fall apart. As they idly pass time, Keita catches a glimpse of a woman resembling Yoko. In an instant, she disappears into the sea…

A young man is abducted by a stranger. He does not know why he has been taken, nor does he know the man’s identity or name. The man, who exists in the shadows, grows resentful of the young man, his counterpart who lives in the light. Out of a twisted form of affection, he attempts to possess, control, and exploit the young man—another version of himself. Seizing an opportunity, the young man escapes. Enraged, the man commits an irreversible act that destroys the very possibility of continuing to exist as his counterpart.
