Based on the short story collection «A Moment Before Happiness» by Oles Honchar. A love story between a Hungarian girl, Lóri, and a Ukrainian soldier, Sashko, at the end of the Second World War. An unexpected meeting and a fleeting moment of happiness are overshadowed by the advances of a Hungarian man who is obsessed with her. Defending his beloved, Sashko kills the jealous rival. The scandal is then covered up by Sashko’s death.

He is truly upset only by the lack of attention of his parents, who are on the verge of divorce. Right on New Year's Eve, Misha suddenly becomes the hero of a fantastic story: he is kidnapped. The hapless kidnappers expect to get a ransom for the boy, but they do not even suspect what kind of child fell into their hands. The tragicomic nature of the situation is complicated by the fact that another "mysterious force" enters the struggle for the boy, trying to "outsmart" and take advantage of his unusual abilities...

In New Year's Eve in the apartment of major Vlasov and his wife warrant officer Natalya Kiselyova the phone rings. It is the General who calls and congratulates Vlasov on perfect objectives on professional development and general military training of Vlasov's subordinates. The General confirms that the major regains his grade as lieutenant-colonel and orders to come to Moscow immediately as he needs him for a very important mission. Vlasov leaves his wife and daughter Masha nicknamed Mukha in Siberia and goes to Moscow.
