Patagonia 3D: In the Footsteps of Charles Darwin

The Grand Canyon is a unique area, painstakingly carved into stone by one single river over a period of millions of years. Inch by inch. The result is a canyon of indescribable and unique beauty. For this reason alone, the Grand Canyon is rightfully a World Natural Heritage Site worthy of protection and an ideal symbiosis of economy and ecology.

In this three part documentary we look at all topics South Africa has to offer. THE BIG FIVE focuses on the kings of animals, lion, rhinoceros, elephant, leopard and the African buffalo. Armed with 3D cameras, we visited the Kings of the savannah and the jungle, where we sensed the fascination that emanates from the largest animals in the wild. In SAFARI we look behind the scenes of a park and found out what it means to pursue eco-tourism and just what the opportunities and the risks are. Finally, we discover the WEST CAPE region and its unique flora and fauna, swim with whales and sea lions, follow penguins and – as a highlight – we meet the white sharks. The Yellowstone National Park is the oldest national park in the world. It is home to a landscape with the world’s highest concentration of geysers and thermal springs, as well as being famous for its herds of bison that roam the plateaus of the highlands.The herds are often accompanied by wolves, which were reintroduced to the Yellowstone National Park around ten years ago. Black bears, beavers and wapitis also inhabit the park, which the locals affectionately refer to as “The Yellowstone”.A park justifiably recognised by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site. After all, in addition to its impressive flora and fauna, the national park provides us with an insight into the history of the Earth’s origins. It transports visitors back into a time when volcanoes and the forces of Mother Nature once shaped our world.

In the days of the Mayas, cenotes – deep, natural pits on the Yucatan peninsula - provided the only means of obtaining drinking water. But in the mythology of this advanced civilisation, these waterholes and caves were also the entrance to Xibalba – the underworld.

The UNESCO National Park Malpelo is located in the Eastern Pacific, roughly 500 kilometres off the Colombian coast. Belonging to a sea corridor, which connects other World Heritage sites such as the Galapagos Islands, Coiba and the Coconut Islands, this National Park, almost 35 hectares in size, is the heart of the nature reserve. Huge shoals of mackerel and barracuda gather in the waters of Malpelo whilst morays hide in the reef fissures and coral caves. Legends abound of diminutive forest-dwellers and dragons. It must be witchcraft, when entire expeditions fail to return. Evil awaits us in the rainforest, where wild animals and poisonous snakes lurk. Rising wafts of fog appear as if emanations from hell. But, do they really exist – the evil spirits of the rainforest? Is the fog in the high cloud forests really the breath of the underworld? On our expedition we encounter the animals of the cloud forest and the mountain rainforests. We witness the birth of peccaries and listen in on the early morning concert of howler monkeys, in their impressive habitat beneath the canopy of the rainforest. We also discover how the ecosystem rainforest actually works on our journey and learn why cyanbacteria are so good for our global climate. We also visit a mushroom farm of a very special kind. Until recently, the region could not be visited for decades, due to radioactive contamination. But how have nature and mankind developed? Accompany us to a very special ships cemetery. The Indian government has been attempting to curb the extinction of species in the world’s third-largest country since 1973. Nature reserves have been established and reintroduction stations founded. Around 1.3 billion people in India need food - towns like Mumbai and Calcutta are bursting at the seams. But resources and arable land are limited – and the population is growing rapidly.
