A Thief in the Dark

Tropical "heat" drives a man into the arms of a disreputable tramp, making things tough for the woman who really loves him.

In Jedda, Persia, American consul George Gage, known as a woman hater, is shocked when his newly arrived assistant, "Billie Baxter," whom he assumes will be a man, turns out to be an attractive woman. Despite his formerly anti-female leanings, George finds himself falling in love with Billie and is jealous when his womanizing friend, Brad Wilson, arrives in Jedda and makes a play for her. At the same time, when the ruling Pasha, Abdul Mustapha, meets Billie, he also becomes smitten and tries to have her brought to his harem. Despite their rivalry, George and Brad join forces and save Billie from the Pasha, after which she decides that George is the man she loves and wants to marry. Considered a lost film.

Taking their sales pitch to a hospital, they get into more trouble and must leave on the run when the head of the hospital turns out to be the owner of the car they ruined.

While Carol Murdock is becoming the golf-champion at the country club, husband Anthony is all wrapped up in his business and rants a lot about how much time his wife spends playing gold, thereby neglecting their home and him. Carol teams up with golfer Phillip Reeves and they win a tournament together, and Reeves becomes infatuated with Carol. Anthony rants some more and Carol packs up and starts the divorce proceedings. Anthony fights back by taking up golf himself.

Billy Barnes gets into trouble over a practical joke on a golf course and ends up in jail, despite his high social standing. But he manages to redeem himself with the help of a jewel thief he befriends in jail.

'While youthful, innocent love blossoms between bashful Stew Kennedy and Elizabeth Gilbert, Dorothy Kennedy falls in love with Jack Conover, completely under the domination of his "aunt," who later proves to be his mother. Though he loves Dorothy, Jack resists making a marriage proposal because he thinks he is illegitimate. Meanwhile, Dorothy becomes pregnant, and efforts to inveigle her into an abortion are thwarted by Dr. Remington, the family doctor, who notifies her mother of her condition. When Jack discovers his true parentage, he offers to marry Dorothy; and ultimately she accepts.' (AFI)

After losing his factory job, virtuoso violinist Tommy Breen is inspired by June Norton, who lives in the same boardinghouse to write his song, "When You Smile with Your Eyes in Mine." Song publisher Simon Berg signs Tommy and the song becomes an enormous success. Success goes to Tommy’s head, he forgets June, surrounds himself with Broadway lowlife, spends extravagantly, and becomes infatuated with Mona Merwin, a musical comedy performer. He hits a rough patch, and June asks Berg to help her save Tommy from himself, so he decreases Tommy's royalty checks. Tommy's Broadway friends desert him when the checks stop coming. Now that Tommy has seen the error of his ways Berg sends him to a country cottage he purchased in Flatbush, where Tommy finds June waiting to marry him.

A secretary (Gloria Stuart) solves a murder for her boyfriend (Michael Whalen) in the district attorney's office.
