The Alpo Story

The Alpo Story

The drug game wasn't personal, it was business.

2007 · 55 min · Crime, Documentary

With his buddies AZ and Rich Porter, Alpo rose to become one of New York’s top drug kingpins in the 1980s. This documentary traces the life and career of the young man dubbed the unofficial “Mayor of Harlem.” Business smarts and hard work led to street fame and enormous fortune for the friends, but when flashy Porter neglected to pay money he owed to the more unassuming Alpo, the rift in their partnership led to betrayal, murder and prison.Eagerly anticipated story about the most popular guy in the most trend-setting part of the world…Harlem. As a young boy growing up in Harlem, Alpo and his friends (AZ & Rich Porter) took advantage of a power vacuum in the drug game after the head kingpins from the ’70s were either killed or incarcerated. Through business savvy (offering the lowest drug prices in town), hard work, and charismatic public relations Alpo became the unofficial “Mayor of Harlem”. Watch as ambition turns to greed, which leads to murder.

Movie
In 1989, 24-year-old Rayful Edmond was sentenced to 25 years in prison for drug trafficking and homicide, but as director Troy Reed's documentary shows, Edmond didn't let incarceration stop his criminal activities. Coincidence put him in a cell with one of Colombia's biggest cocaine distributors, allowing Edmond to expand his Washington, D.C.–based empire from behind bars. The irony of the ensuing events is as riveting as any Hollywood film.

Ultimately, it was a dead-end street for Hines, as he was gunned down. This is his story.

Raised on the mean streets of the Bronx, Larry Davis made a name for himself by manipulating both sides of the law. No one was immune from Davis' savvy manipulation -- not the corrupt cops or the violent crack dealers. But keeping up such a stressful lifestyle isn't easy, and just as Davis was preparing to go straight it all fell apart. When the police forced their way into Davis' sister's apartment, the elusive criminal fled out the window. In the seventeen days that followed, Davis led authorities on a 17-day manhunt that would only end when Davis surrendered to the F.B.I. In guerilla-style, this documentary, filmmaker explores the remarkable flight of Larry Davis and the events that ultimately unfolded when he was finally apprehended by authorities and placed on trial.
