Thirty years have passed since Zhenya and Nadya met—they broke up, and Nadya moved to Leningrad. The friends still go to the bathhouse, and now they are joined by Konstantin, Zhenya's son. Uncle Pasha and Uncle Sasha persuade Kostya to arrange a New Year's miracle for his father and send him to St. Petersburg. The plot is not developed; in the film we see a man (he) and a woman (she) who, in fact, are neither connected nor familiar with each other; they casually met in hospital. "She" (Viktoria Tolstoganova) does not see that she is in danger in connection with her plan to use a tape with illegally made recordings as compromising evidence in court. "He" (Il'ia Shakunov, an actor of the Petersburg TYuZ) is a gay translator who, after the random meeting with her, is pursued by her image which frequently pops up in front of him. As a consequence, his relationship with a young boy no longer satisfies him. Both he and she lose sight of the meaning of life, because of their own inability to see others and to see love, as perception relies on proximity instead of distance.

During World War II, a father, mother, and son fought for Ukraine's freedom in their own ways. The father fought and died in the ranks of the Red Army, the mother worked as a secretary for the Union of Ukrainian Women (the largest women's organization in Galicia), and 16-year-old Mykhailo was a staunch supporter of anti-Soviet propaganda, for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Koval is a lonely investigator for whom work is the only meaning of life. He awaits the NBR - a department that investigates the most complex murders. A team of eccentric but loyal professionals becomes his family, and Koval's own secrets are the most painful.
