The Age of Insects

A German journalist on the run from mobsters in New York embarks on a road trip across the United States, picking up a female auto mechanic on the run, before his past catches up with him. Shot in 16mm by Egyptian-born director Degas using local crews, a mix of professional and amateur performers, and rural landscapes as a backdrop, this lesser-known No Wave feature comes from a school of New York independent filmmaking inspired by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Wim Wenders.

A founding member of The Blind Boys of Alabama, one of the world’s most successful gospel groups, Clarence Fountain has lived a remarkable life, full of music and passion. Now in his eighties, slowed by age and diabetes, Clarence retains his brash charm, and wistfully recalls his decades of glory, from beginnings in the choir of a school for the blind, to the group’s sudden rise to stardom as “Oedipus” in the experimental musical The Gospel at Colonus.

DIDN'T DO IT FOR LOVE is a documentary portrait of Eva Norvind, a.k.a. Mistress Ava Taurel, born Eva Johanne Chegodaieva Sakonskaya in Trondheim, Norway. The film follows Eva's many careers, from her time as a showgirl in Paris to becoming Mexico's Marilyn Monroe in the 1960s to establishing herself as New York's most famous dominatrix in the 1980s. Using clips from Norvind's Mexican films, stills from various periods, and interviews with friends, partners and family, Treut's documentary traces Eva's search for the wellspring of her obsessive and dark sexuality.
