The action takes place against the backdrop of a looming war. Soviet intelligence intercepts an order from the high command of Nazi Germany to cross the Soviet border.

The action takes place in one of the major port cities of the North. Young welder Mark Talalin and foreman Ilya Besedin cannot find the true reasons for their disagreements and conflicts.

Andrey Yarchuk, the foreman of the collective farm construction team, leaves for the city after Marinka, who was sent by the collective farm to study at an agricultural institute. After learning that the villagers are mocking Andrei, Marinka is transferred to the correspondence department and returns to the village. However, pride does not allow Andrey to return. Lovers will have to go through many adventures before they meet in their native Kohanovka.

Soviet agent Fedotov is air-dropped into Nazi occupied land. He changes over into Mr. Ekhert, a German entrepreneur wishing to take advantage of eastern worker slave labor in occupied Ukraine. Ekhert (Fedotov) enters into a partnership with a German entrepreneur who's son, Willie, is a high ranking Nazi. Together they go to Vinnitsa, Ukraine and start a factory. Fedotov begins seeking contacts with headquarters, but faces problems when a Ukrainian Nazi collaborator manages to infiltrate the Soviet partisans.

In October 1943, Red Army Major Toporkov, after escaping a concentration camp, informs a partisan detachment about a planned uprising in the camp and the need for weapons. The commander sends two convoys: one with real weapons and another with fake ones to mislead the Germans, aware of a traitor in their ranks. The convoys navigate through Polesie, thickets, and swamps, pursued by German forces, with no return.

As it happens, they end up in the same mountaineering group. Petrov turns out to be the leader. It took the rigors of group life and considerable difficulties for Nazarov to understand how courageous, humane, and wholehearted Petrov is.
