A Victorian surgeon rescues a heavily disfigured man being mistreated by his "owner" as a side-show freak. Based on the true story of Joseph Merrick (called John Merrick in the film), a severely deformed man in 19th century London.

She describes life's vicious cycle: acting cheerful around drunks, dressing and living well to convey confidence, needing money for these expenses and for her demanding mother and brother, and knowing she's growing older.
