Elegy for my Camcorder

12 Canadian seaside views, combined into one imagined ocean in a way, that only cinema can do.

Due to a broken getaway car, three Russian jewel thieves are forced to take shelter in an empty Viennese coffee house. They knock out the waiter and call their fourth accomplice. Ten minutes until the new car arrives! Unfortunately two policemen enter the cafe and take a seat. As the only people present, the villains are mistaken for waiters - with fatal consequences.

Mr. Bulge did not water the orchid from Mr. Belly. In order to escape responsibility, he spins a confusing web of lies and conspiracy theories, in which he eventually gets caught.

A year in the garden. An attempt to see the garden anew over and over; to discover it. The joy of seeing. In the course of a year different possibilities, ideas and arrangements of the garden arise. In episodes these different ways of seeing and the changes of the garden itself are documented.

On July 15th 1934, an illegal gathering of socialists took place in the Vienna Woods. When the fascist police discovered them, they opened fire and killed 2 young men. 90 years later, the traces left by the incident have almost disappeared. A group of people return to recall the past. The trees and the wind can bear witness to history.

A video on my mobile phone creates an obsession. It shows a relative on his last birthday before passing away. I hadn't seen him for many years. The video opens up questions and thoughts: Are there ghosts? If so: What are they? how do they reveal themselves? What can images capture? How do we remember others?

In 2017 I saw a film called "Hana Chirinu" in Bologna, at a festival. It was only one of many cinematic encounters I've had with Japanese cinema over the years, yet this one stuck with me in particular. Since then I have realised how hard it is to see the film outside of Japan. I have decided to send its maker, a filmic letter through time and space.

A group of film students meets and discusses fundamental questions: "Do you believe the future will be better than the past?", "Why? Why not?". Meanwhile, images of the filmmaking process behind this film are also captured. Its own creation is documented. And within this process, doubts emerge: about the film itself, the meaningfulness of the project, the chosen shot size, the ability to express oneself effectively in front of a camera.
