A businessman books a Santa Claus with his wife from the student employment service for his children on Christmas Eve. He appears too late and when he realizes that he should only be the mess clown for the children so that they can go to bed quickly, because business friends are supposed to come to dinner, he calls his colleagues.

It is normal for 15-year-old Linn to have two mothers. But when she finds out that there are still numerous siblings, she realizes that she is part of an extraordinary extended family. Her father Eike not only had an appointment with Linn's mothers to donate sperm, Petra and Anny also have three children with him. A film crew followed this rainbow family for twelve years.

A baby is supposed to crown the dreamlike marriage of the divorce attorneys Pia and Uli, but the success of all their efforts – ranging from “sex on a schedule” to artificial insemination – fails to materialize. When Pia learns that Uli has cheated on her during this difficult period, she immediately files for a divorce. But Uli fights stubbornly for the custody of the deep-frozen oocytes which have remained from the artificial insemination.

But John, a bon vivant, humorously lets Franka down.

This unusual rainbow family chronicle was filmed over a period of 12 years. In 2009, the documentary journey begins with two mothers and their three sons and a man. From diapers to soccer, babies mature into teenagers with their own opinions. Old family secrets are revealed, love comes and goes. An unexpected letter arrives from a girl to her half-brothers. Surprisingly, this constellation develops into a family universe by 2021.

Martin wants to catch up on his exams. In order to be admitted as a hardship case, he "borrows" his neighbor's child. His buddy Lars, a successful lawyer, wistfully remembers his old student days and wants to let it rip again before he gets married.
