The Berger family lives on the sixth and top floor of a Parisian building. They feel so good there that they would like to expand their space and dream of taking over the very nice apartment of the Tissandier family, their friendly neighbors on the fifth floor, in order to create a lovely duplex that matches their ambitions. They are left with only one solution: to use all possible means to achieve their goals, even the most questionable and especially the most unlikely...

Liz and Hugh Preston have been living a life of perfect harmony for fifteen years — what one commonly calls “happiness.” But this peaceful bliss has gradually led to a certain boredom, prompting one of the spouses to cheat on the other — what one frankly calls “adultery.” But who, in fact, is responsible for this minor disaster? Hugh claims it’s Liz. His wife, on the other hand, has good reason to believe it’s her husband who strayed. Fortunately, Hugh will find a way to defend his love and save their marriage. François Pignon, an accountant in a condom factory, learns that he is going to be fired. Already overwhelmed by personal problems, he decides to throw himself out the window. He is stopped in his tracks by his next-door neighbor who suggests an unexpected plan to keep his job: pretend to be a homosexual. Assuming that in this age of political correctness, one does not fire a gay man, he manages to convince Pignon to play along while remaining a discreet and shy little man... What will change is the way others look at him. Pignon will thus benefit from an unusual reintegration by coming out of a closet where he had never entered.
