A family crime comedy by Juliusz Machulski, written especially for the Television Theater. "Fish canero" is a bit of a comedy of errors, a bit of a study of our recent behavior, and a bit of a criminal investigation full of riddles. Funny and scary at the same time. Funny and fast-paced dialogues, satirical portraits of characters, brilliant observation of customs - all this makes the author's play by Juliusz Machulski an extremely successful criminal family comedy. The play is set in the villa of Professor Stefan Vogel during a wake, which is a family celebration after his mysterious and sudden death. His son Ignacy Vogel, the owner of a publishing house, has a lot of problems on his head: firstly, he has to accommodate the late professor's guests, and secondly, his daughter Marianna - a famous TV series celebrity - is pregnant and is about to give birth.

Though constantly dreaming of a romantic love, he is not bold enough to make his dreams come true. The desperate Miauczynski personalizes our own fears and obsessions, which have become so visible recently.

An attractive student puts the teacher in an awkward spot when she reveals her love for him. An 11-year-old informs the priest that she's his daughter. The army officer is pleased when confronted by a past lover. The drug dealer, taken prisoner, must decide whether or not to trust his wife with his hidden loot. In the wrap-up, the elderly accountant passes judgment on all four men. Stuhr acted in films by the late Krzysztof Kieslowski, who had some input here by offering advice to Stuhr on this screenplay.

The story begins in March of 1968, the days of students protests. A hot- headed student protests the Dean's decision to expell a fellow student on fake accusation charges, upon which he drops out of university rather than make a compromise. He loses everything in the process: his girlfriend, housing privileges - he becomes a coal deliverer. On the job he witnesses an accident that causes death of a fellow worker. He decides to write a story, which is good and a publishing house wants to print it, but only after some corrections are made. He refuses again and the story is not printed. Finally, a story is commercialized and made into a succesful film and brings fame to the original author.
