Solar Paludism

An experimental documentary about the spectacle of substance abuse on social media. More than 45 hours of footage, hundreds of pages of blog posts and interviews were distilled and remixed using glitch and cut-up techniques to insure anonymity, transcend the shock factor and unfold this complex, singular and stratified use of social media.

ANA is: a) An investigation of a cyber-sect linked to the disappearances of several women online. b) A moodboard of the aesthetization of self-destruction. c) A found footage documentary about today's subcultures.

Unable to adapt to ever-accelerating technological developments and cultural paradigm shifts, the Global Ministry of Education transferred the creation of its educational softwares to the leader of Artificial Intelligence, Alphabet. The objectives: maintaining aesthetic and lexical relevance to keep the youth interested in learning while preparing them for the current and upcoming crisis (increasing atmospheric temperature and bacteriological terrorist attacks from the Third World Axis, for instance). The AI unfortunately sent an entire generation in disarray, leading children to severe mental illnesses and violent antisocial tendencies.

Two men have been waiting many years to see each other again. Their destinies are linked to a mysterious Super 8MM film roll. Thus begins a one-way journey into their past.

In 2009, Remy Couture, a special effects makeup artists from Quebec was arrested by the police right in front of his home and would be later charged with obscenity and corruption of morality. Montreal's police was responding to a complaint regarding pictures coming from his website Inner depravity.com which had been freely circulating on the Web. ART/CRIME discusses violence, fiction and censorship in movies but also in the loosely regulated environment that the Web still represents. The documentary allows many, like movie director Nacho Cerda, Robert Morin and Patrick Senechal to present their thoughts on the matter.

An inversion (as above so below) : flesh and incarnation of images seen through meditation. Eternal lust with no hopes of satisfaction.

The staging is simplistic: a doll, a man and some tools. All these elements are brought together in a basement lit by several spotlights. The Man is a body and a conscience. His role is the infinite potential of sadistic will. The sexual drive, fueled by alcohol and drugs, is so strong that it erodes the carnal envelope, from the epidermis to the nerves. The doll, a model for medical simulations, is nothing but plastic. Plastic, but icon, symbol and, consequently, marked by unheimliche. A man possessed by a libidinal frenzy and a doll with feminine forms.

The prey becomes the predator on a quest for murder-fuelled orgasm.
