The story of the life of St. Catherine of Siena

The film presents the tale of Agnese Ascalone, daughter of prominent miner Vincenzo Ascalone, and takes place in a small town in Sicily. Agnese is seduced by her sister Matilde's fiancé, and has a tryst with him for which she confesses and tries to repent, only to be discovered by her mother and father.

Ruined by a local tyrant who also gets to marry his daughter to pay off a debt, a Sicilian ensures the girl's innocence and counts on the ardor of her lover to collect the prize and prevent her marriage to the squire.

Two rich Sicilian cousins sell their farm because they want to help two fake Siamese twins separate and then marry them. After the operation the girls are thought to be dead but then they reappear to con more money out of the two gullible men. Will they manage to do so?

The film's theme is four episodes that offer the public a glimpse into the lives of rich and poor families in Italy in the 1960s.
