I'm Home, a Place for Everyone

Komaba Dormitory at the University of Tokyo was closed down after a bitter dispute between the students and the university. This film collage tells the story of the two years leading up to the actual demolition of Komaba Dormitory.

Kenzo Okuzaki, a 62-year-old veteran of the New Guinea campaign in World War II, sets out to conduct interviews with survivors and relatives to find the truth behind atrocities committed by Japanese military, in particular the unexplained killing of two Japanese privates in his unit.

A tough woman is dragging a weaker man deeper and deeper into crime. Woman cop Miki is chasing a wanted man when she stumbles on a crashed car and sees the driver, Koichi, ignite spilled petrol to kill himself and his passenger. She drags Koichi to safety, but the passenger dies. Miki says nothing to challenge the inquest finding of `accidental death', and when she visits Koichi in hospital he begins to understand that her complicity in his crime implies a sexual invitation. But a gumshoe has photos of the crash, and the only way to stall his blackmail is to kill him, the first of several murders...

The facility has tried out numerous unique experiments including nutrition education through meals prepared with organic ingredients, treatment for kids with ADHD, and after-school care for kids after they graduate from daycare. The camera also captures the reality of 24-hour childcare centers in Hokkaido, Niigata and Okinawa.

Ishikawa Bunyo was born in Okinawa in 1938, reported on the Vietnam War from 1964, and continued to document Okinawa after his return to Japan. This film travels with Bunyo, now 75 years old, through Vietnam and Okinawa, looking back at his footsteps and listening to his thoughts on war and peace as he talks about them.

Tobishima used to be a prosperous sea transportation hub in the Sea of Japan, but now it is a quiet island with a small and aging population. The only junior high school student in the island will graduate this year, and his school, Tobishima Elementary and Junior High School, will be closed at the end of this school year. This film captures the daily lives of the various people living on Tobishima and follows the activities of those who are struggling to maintain the community and connect the island to the future while facing the harsh reality of the situation.
