The Call

Johannesburg, 1968. Khuthala hates his father's laundry and doesn't want to take over the family business. But the apartheid government is cracking down on black business ownership. Khuthala is torn between pursuing his own dreams of becoming a musician and fighting against the injustice that threatens the business.

A forgotten hotel. Two groups of men fight to the death, for a kingdom dreamt up by a rooster. A forgotten hotel. Two groups of men. All seem locked in this strange architecture from a previous era. Why they cannot leave the place, we do not know. A red and a black rooster share with the men the reclusion, witnesses of a battle, an abstract war, a nightmare.

A teen boy runs errands while being followed by various figures of authority. As he shares his experience with friends, this tense and controlled drama deftly explores the cyclical effects of victimization on the wider community.
