The Roman of Renart

An ogre breaks his teeth the day before Saint-Festin, the ogres’ great celebration day. A magician botches his trick of sawing a woman in half, and loses his assistant’s legs. An overequipped hiker gets stuck in the elevator for several days. An old man falls in love with a runaway pair of legs. A mother asks her neighbour to look after her children on the eve of Saint-Festin… In one building, the lives of ten next-door neighbours, or the neighbours of neighbours, intertwine as they grapple with the dramas, joys, surprises and dangers of everyday life.

Cucu lives with her mother. Tonight, it is her father's turn to babysit. Except, Arnaud is more used to rave parties than pyjama parties. When it is time to go to bed, Cucu wants her father to read her a story. Arnaud refuses, pretending he is useless at reading. He then starts improvising an impossible love story between Sissi the Empress and Hercules the half-god.

Popolo, a magician full of spirit who works at a small circus, loses the legs of his beloved assistant Amabilé during the act of the woman cut in half. Of course, she gets mad at him, especially when they are both fired. To cheer her up, Popolo promises to pay her a vacation, but he needs to find a job first, any job.

Cowboys aren't afraid to die. Their death, always spectacular, is the grand finale of a tragic destiny. But when a cowboy messes up his exit, when he seems to hesitate awkwardly between life and death, the Western turns to the absurd.

At the turn of the century, Rose-Aimée, the hard working wife of photographer J.A. Martin, decides to leave her children with an aunt to go with him on his annual tour of the Québec countryside. She hopes the intimacy will rekindle their marriage.
