Professor Balthazar: Lighthouse Keeping

An amusingly drawn cartoon about a highly proficient lady bricklayer, graduate of Specialists' School, whose work takes her high up in the world, and her erstwhile friend, whose equally dedicated professionalism brings him lower. She builds towers of bricks while he tunnels down below ground. What develops in the story involves other unlikely characters, plausible enough in this cartoon context.

A richly illustrated cartoon film that enlarges on man's capacity to foul his own nest, and to ignore it. Made by a joint team of Canadian and Yugoslav animation artists, the film transmits its warning with unflagging humor, imagination, movement and design. In between animated sequences Dr. Fred H. Knelman, Professor of Science and Human Affairs at Concordia University in Montréal, comments on the import of what is shown and on what lies in store if more responsibility is not taken on a global scale to conserve what is left of our vital resources and usable environment.

Two cheerful friends, comedians, are looking in vain for something for breakfast in the morning. They come up with an original idea. They transform into an exhausted horse and thus manage to sneak into a mansion, which a rich woman has turned into a luxurious home for all kinds of animals as her hobby. A series of comical situations arise there due to the great attention shown to the comedians — the horse, as an animal. For example, they are served an abundance of the finest hay, which they, of course, eat, marking, etc. The climax occurs in a race between the "horse" and the farrier, who wants to shoe it and ends up being shoed himself. But their cunning is discovered and they are rudely thrown out into the street, with the knowledge that they fared better as animals than as people.

Today, a butterfly can never be certain that flitting from flower to flower won’t cause major incidents…

Objects live their lives; they rejoice harmlessly, they love, they suffer, but above all they enjoy their own liberation from the chains of objectivity, from the restraint of functionality. They childishly surrender to the frenzy of action, to the motion of movement. New beings, mutants of civilization. Objects seen differently.
