The Evening of all Days

On June 22, 1991, photographer Chäschpu misses the decisive goal in the Swiss Cup final. His entire life, he has successfully stumbled through his permanent provisional existence. On this day, Graszena memorizes the drinks menu of her new employer. She takes what life as a foreign waitress has to offer. Tina, the student from the countryside, runs away from home. But she always does that. Night nurse Lucie lives in her world of books. No wonder she sleepwalks and has to put up bars before going to bed. Özgür from Turkey is different: he dreams of great happiness. And because that is so hard to find, he imagines he has already found it. Here in Switzerland, of course. What connects these five very different characters?

Two dissimilar types – the earnest impassive Bede and the easy-going Luki – suddenly find themselves thrown together. Their difficulties with women, the world, each other and themselves force them to search together for their own way. Hesitant and somewhat helpless, they turn to each other. Thus begins an obstacle race that is not without ist amusing side.

Max would have stayed on his lonely alp forever. Then this Yankee puts a flea in his ear and tells him that he can have any woman with an edelweiss. Max has an edelweiss. ...She lives in Rome and has the unusual name Maria. But unfortunately not only noble intentions. It's a matter of life and death. Max chooses Edelweiss and wins Maria as his wife. Everything looks like a happy ending, but Max finds himself in the far reaches of Siberia... He never wanted to go there. Not without Maria anyway, and in a deadly showdown Max follows her trail of blood... Nothing should be spared in this black slapstick. Certainly not love.

Max and Chrige, a married couple of Swiss linguists, hike the Alps searching for rare words still uttered by the rural population. While on his way to a conference, the husband's plane disappears over the sea. Chrige is advised to give up hope of ever seeing him alive, but her heart tells her otherwise. Max comes ashore on a tropical island with another survivor, the plane's pilot. But where are they in reality?

Europe is not a place, but an idea: Europa is a woman, and she is Greek; hers is a history so long, so full of wonders and horrors, of successes and failures, that the moral values that governed her existence have ended up changing radically over the centuries, to the point of losing any meaning and finally disappearing.

In their very own ways, scientists, artists and wandering souls search in the inhospitable and mythical desert landscape for the meaning of life.
