Thomas plays in a band way out in the countryside of Jutland and dreams of making it big with his own songs. When an opportunity suddenly appears – a concert gig in Copenhagen – he puts everything on the line to get his friends on board.

In the early morning of April 9, 1940, the Danish army is alerted: the Germans have crossed the border.

Life is not easy for 11-year-old Allan living in South Jutland during the early 1970s. His mentally unstable father frequently threatens suicide and his mother has long since given up. It's up to Allan to keep the family together. When a rival family threatens his father's livelihood, Allan starts committing atrocious acts.

Realizing that her unknown biological father is probably alive, Sofia leaves behind a degrading and humiliating life and embarks on a journey with her naive half-sister Olivia, both girls hoping to find the caring father figure they so desperately need.
