Gustav and Lena Svensson are facing their 30-year wedding anniversary , but Lena can't stand Gustav anymore and therefore wants to divorce him. The only thing Gustav does is to watch sport - any sport at any time - and doesn't give Lena any attention at all. Gustav however, thinks that everything is great and doesn't think they can give up just a week before their anniversary . Lena gives Gustav one absolute last chance and they go off on a love weekend where Gustav will have to prove that Lena is more important than football and TV. But at the hotel football legend Tommy Franzén shows up and messes everything up for Gustav!

The show, which is intended to be humorous yet educational, has remained one of the most popular TV shows in Sweden, attracting an average of 2,150,000 viewers during the 2007 season. The all-time record was set in March 1990, when 3.7 million people tuned in to see the show. This means that nearly every second Swede saw the game show. På spåret is an original format developed by Ingvar Oldsberg for SVT, and he hosted the show for many years. Author and tennis legend Björn Hellberg was promoted from contestant to permanent Oldsberg sidekick in 1995 after winning for four straight seasons. Famous gourmet, restaurant-owner, and former contestant Carl-Jan Grankvist sat in for Hellberg during the 2004 season. In 2009, after 21 years, Oldsberg left and Kristian Luuk took over as the host. Björn Hellberg too decided to leave and was replaced with Fredrik Lindström.

During the second season, each episode gathered more than 2.5 million viewers, in a country which at the time had a population of around 8.8 million people. The most watched episode was broadcast on 17 November 1996 and gathered 3,395,000 viewers. The series centres around the Svensson family who lives in the Vivalla area of Örebro. The family consists of the father Gustav who works as mailman, the mother Lena who works at a bank, their teenage daughter Lina and their son Max. For the revival, Gustav has had to retire from his work at the post office, while Lena works for the local government. Max now works at the bank and Lina has married the conductor John who brought his daughter Greta into the family.
