A Russian circus visits the US. A clown wants to defect, but doesn't have the nerve. His saxophone playing friend however comes to the decision to defect in the middle of Bloomingdales. He is befriended by the black security guard and falls in love with the Italian immigrant from behind the perfume counter. We follow his life as he works his way through the American dream and tries to find work as a musician.

Only one lady is standing up to the challenge. Her name is Marianna, she loves animals, and she takes the situation under control.

In the early days of the city's occupation, Vazgen joined the partisans. His wife was shot and killed by a German patrol. Varazdat and Mariam were left alone. They went to visit their neighbor, Uncle Stepan, who had recently escaped from a Soviet prison and was now afraid of both his own people and strangers.
