Jorge, a successful engineer and employee of a ministry and Luísa, a romantic and dreamy girl, star as the typical bourgeois couple of the Lisbon society of the 19th century.

Sent to Mexico to help take care of aging Father Benito, young Father Amaro faces a moral challenge when he meets a 16-year-old girl who he starts an affair with. Likewise, the girl's mother had been having an affair with Father Benito. Father Amaro must choose between a holy or sinful life.

An adaptation of the short story with the same name by Portuguese writer Eça de Queiroz.

Summer of 1870. Two writers, Eça de Queiroz and Ramalho Ortigão, decide to write a four-handed whodunit for the daily "Diário de Notícias". Pedro da Maia, meets a beautiful woman called Maria Monforte with whom he gets married despite his father's objection. The marriage produces a son, Carlos Eduardo, and a daughter. Some time later, Maria Monforte falls in love with Tancredo and runs away to Italy with him, taking her daughter along. Eventually Carlos finds out later that Maria lied to him about her past and he starts fearing the worst. In the end, Carlos finds out that Maria is his sister. He informs her that they are siblings and that they cannot live like this anymore. Carlos, to forget his tragedies, goes for a trip around the world.

Based on Eça de Queiroz's 1875 novel, the plot takes place in Leiria, Portugal, at the end of the 1860s, and follows the story of the forbidden passion between Amaro, a young priest, and Amélia, "the most beautiful girl in Leiria". Tense, emotional and rooted in personality conflicts, the series takes a critical look at society and the church in Portugal, in Leiria in the 19th century.

Arriving in Lisbon from London, Basílio falls in love with his cousin Luísa, but he must go to Brazil, promising he will eventually marry her. Juliana gets hold of love letters between Luísa and Basílio and starts to blackmail her employer.
