Jacek, an angry drifter, murders a taxi driver, brutally and without motive. His case is assigned to Piotr, an idealistic young lawyer who is morally opposed to the death penalty, and their interactions take on an emotional honesty that throws into stark relief for Piotr the injustice of killing of any kind.

Jacek climbs into the taxi driven by Waldemar, tells him to drive to a remote location, then brutally strangles him, seemingly without motive.

Wanda and Tadeusz host a christening for their granddaughter, tension simmering as they reluctantly invite Małgorzata and her psychotherapist friend Grażyna. The Christmas tree is already dressed, the table is set, the only thing missing is the first star so that you can sit down to dinner. The girl accidentally learns that the Christmas Eve star was hidden by an evil, jealous witch. The search begins, the heroine is helped by her beloved mascot - a teddy bear.

In 1943, a drunk cook is mistaken for a secret agent and sent on a special mission from London to Nazi-occupied Poland.

Poland, 1945. Crowds of repatriates are traveling from east to west in search of new homes and loved ones lost during the war. At one of the train stations, a young woman, Hanna Powiłańska, sits among the crowd of displaced persons. The girl recalls a story of turbulent love. Before the war, at a carnival ball, she met the handsome Lech Oleszkiewicz. In September, war broke out. Hanna meets the engineer again and spends the night with him. In the morning, the man tells her that he is married. Hanna breaks off the relationship.
