In 1953, the year Stalin died, many prisoners (some political, but mostly common criminals) were released from the Soviet Gulags. This is the story of a remote settlement which was under attack by a bunch of these recently-released blood-thirsty thugs in the summer of 1953, and the townspeople, along with a two political prisoners, who try to stop them.

Russian provincial town in the middle of the 1930s Stalin's Great Purge. Ivan Lapshin, the head of the local police, does what he has to do. And he does it well.

In their youth, they loved each other, but broke up. Ilya got married, became a doctor, Sasha learned to become an engineer, got married. And now they are together again, at a small, deaf station. They introduced themselves as husband and wife. In fact, while he is married to another, and she has the experience of a failed marriage. For eight days they will be in a remote stop where no one knows them and no one will interfere with love...

The events of the film take place in the first days of May 1966. Nikolai Kuznetsov, a distinguished veteran of the Great Patriotic War and former camp guard, accidentally meets one of his former prisoners. This encounter leads to new meetings—and new insights into the years that have passed...

The end of the XVIII century. The reign of Catherine II. After returning from the army, Rustam easily and naturally fits into the environment of workers from a petrochemical plant. The almost boyish carelessness and irresponsible pastime is replaced by an understanding of one's own need for a common cause, and a sense of inner dignity arises. This is what makes Rustam not reconcile himself to the fact that the brigade in which he works is among the laggards and is characterized by indiscipline. Having become a foreman, Rustam tries to create a healthy working atmosphere, takes part in the fate of Sagat, who recently returned from prison, rejects the attempts of the head of the shop to bribe the trust of the brigade with a "fake" salary. And outside the factory, he acts from a position of active kindness, although sometimes, helping others, he forgets about himself, does not have time to sort out the relationship with his girlfriend Lucy...
