Doctor Henck will die on this cold and dark Christmas Eve 1897. The poor Dr Henck visits his best friend, the wealthy stockbroker John Richardt, to borrow some money for a Christmas present to his wife and newborn baby. The gentle Richardt lends his friend not only the money, but also his exclusive fur coat so that Dr Henck can walk back home in dignity. With a spark of life, and curious to see his wife's reaction, Dr Heck happily returns home wearing his friend's fur coat.

A desperate young writer is lured on a wild ride through the desert by a mysterious woman in this darkly comic take on the all-American road trip. Along the way they cross paths with a hapless mobster, a 6 foot transvestite and a lovesick housewife, all on the way to their celebrity TV shrink in Las Vegas... Things quickly spiral out of control into a dangerous cat-and-mouse game... a writer's frantic search for inspiration becomes intertwined with a motley crew of quirky characters seeking love and adventure at any cost.

Scandinavia, 1846. A poor young girl forced to sell matchsticks desperately lights one match to survive the winter night. She is drawn into a dream world where the flames of fire give her hope for a better life, while the cold creeps closer. Based on H.C. Andersen's short story.
