From the ‘Arturo Toscanini’ Auditorium in Turin, as part of the Rai NuovaMusica series, conductor Pascal Rophé presents ‘Gli occhi che si fermano’ for orchestra by Francesco Antonioni and the Italian premiere of ‘T.S.D.’ for cello and orchestra by Giya Kancheli, performed by cellist Mario Brunello. The second half of the evening is entirely dedicated to the great Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös with ‘Reading Malevich’ for orchestra and ‘Dialog mit Mozart’, a piece for orchestra.

From the Rai “Arturo Toscanini” Auditorium, Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov, together with the Rai Orchestra's principal trumpet Roberto Rossi, performs Dmitri Shostakovich's Concerto in C minor for Piano, Trumpet, and Strings, Op. 26. Conducting is James Feddeck, who opens and closes the concert with two works by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: the Overture from the Concerto in B minor, Op. 26, “The Hebrides,” and Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56, known as the “Scottish.”

From the RAI “Arturo Toscanini” Auditorium in Turin, the RAI National Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to Igor Stravinsky, on the fiftieth anniversary of his death, with *Pulcinella* conducted by Ottavio Dantone, one of the foremost interpreters of early music, a harpsichordist and conductor, and a leading expert and scholar of Baroque performance practice. The vocal parts are performed by mezzo-soprano Paola Gardina, the young Australian tenor Alasdair Kent, and bass-baritone Paolo Bordogna. The evening concludes with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s famous Symphony No. 41 in C major, K. 551, known as “Jupiter.”

Between the two pieces by Luciano Berio, Ion Marin presents Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten.

From the Rai Arturo Toscanini Auditorium, conductor Juraj Valčuha presents the Rai premiere in Turin of Jean Sibelius’s Symphonic Poem Op. 73, *Aallottaret* (The Oceanides), followed by the *Four Sea Interludes* from Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece *Peter Grimes*. In the second half of the programme, the mood shifts with two masterpieces of extreme expressive power: the Concert Suite from Béla Bartók’s one-act pantomime The Miraculous Mandarin and Maurice Ravel’s La valse, composed between 1919 and 1920, when Europe was attempting to emerge from the ruins of the Great War.
