Two boys, age ten, spend their summer in idyllic rural surroundings. They play in the fields, they swim au natural, and more often than not - - - they find themselves in the company of those very beings that a ten-year-old boy pretends to hate..... girls!

A small girl, Marit, is living on a farm eagerly awaiting the birth of a new calf, but there are trolls living in the woods nearby, including a kind little troll kid that's lost his mother.

A Jewish family leaves Germany after surviving the Holocaust and heads to Norway. Mendel, their youngest son, is too young to make sense of the Holocaust but tries to comprehend his family's actions during the war and their nightmares now. His imagination frequently runs away from him.
