An angelic-looking but selfish and ruthless young man wanders from crime to crime without the slightest remorse. In the Russian film "Satan," the devil is a delicately handsome young man whose murderous opportunism is too easy to understand. While the film registers shock at its protagonist's absolute amorality, it also presents him as part of a bitterly divided and pessimistic culture. The world of "Satan" is one in which nothing really works, and therefore anything goes.

After a tragic accident that resulted in a person’s death, the one responsible lives an unreal, ghostlike life: the protagonist constantly rides a dark tram whose passengers are his old acquaintances from his former, real life.

For four years, a “train of mercy” travels the roads of war, evacuating the wounded from the front lines. Bombings, blood, death, and brief moments of respite bring together the people who are saving the lives of strangers. They all become one big family.
