There's a great deal of excitement on a small North Sea island: A millionairess has arrived, accompanied by her elderly secretary. No one knows why the lady is vacationing here of all places. It's particularly strange that Ellinor, as the sophisticated city woman is called, is snooping around everywhere. She's being watched suspiciously by all the islanders. But it's all just a game! In reality, the elderly secretary is a millionaire – his name is Jan Remmers, and he left his home island many years ago to pursue a career overseas. Now he's returned, but he doesn't want to reveal his identity until he's found out whether the community would welcome him warmly even without his millions. Unfortunately, Remmers discovers that no one is expecting him in his old home: His former fiancée, Berta, has married the fisherman Hinnerk, and his son, Peter, is a very independent engineer. Proud of his son, Remmers is secretly supporting a major construction project Peter is working on.

The engineer Wolff Benningsen (Volker von Collande), a self-assured and über-obnoxious jingo jerk meets the young art student Vika von Demnitz (Leny Marenbach) while climbing in the Alps. One get's the idea that he would like to knock her over the head with a club and drag her to his cave but since this is out of fashion he decides to stalk her and annoy her heavy-handedly into a full submission. Understandingly, she instantly dislikes the lad and tries to shake him off. She succeeds a few times but then starts to suffer from some kind of Stockholm syndrome and falls for him. But that's not enough for him, being an infantile egoist he wants to tame the "wild bird" fully and break every last bit of her own will. It's all hard to believe if you haven't seen it yourself.

Olga, a woman of the demimonde, is shot in her apartment. The bullet was deflected by something, otherwise it would have killed Olga. Witnesses heard a noise at 2 p.m. that sounded like a gunshot. Detective Heidenreich investigates and discovers that the perpetrator must have been one of the tenants in the building. He realizes that many people are suspects.

On the eve of the Russian Revolution, a performance of "Tosca" is taking place at the opera house. The artists and staff are too engrossed in their work to notice the unrest in the streets. The leading roles are played by Marina Marta and René Areno, who are also lovers. However, Marina has another admirer in Captain Alexander von Harbin. When, during the final performance, the insurgent communists suddenly storm the opera house, Alexander seems to be Marina's last hope…
