The orphaned sisters Annie, Karin, Grace, Irene and Maud return home to Denmark, where they make a living from their musical talents. After some time in Copenhagen, they decide to contact their only relative, an eccentric landowner. But not everyone is happy about the five sisters' arrival on the estate, and when the lord decides to play gardener in order to better look after the five, there is no shortage of complications.

A lottery win allows the kitchen girl Hansy Hansen to lodge at an upmarket seaside hotel where the widower landowner Rosen falls in love with her. However, Rosen is in financial difficulties because of the lawyer Sadolin, who reneged on marrying his daughter. He puts everything he can into the daughter's horse to win a race.

A picture of the life of the Danish people from the late 1820s to the introduction of the free constitution in 1849. A fictional character, Rasmus Nielsen, travels around the country, first as a traveling teacher, later in other positions, and through his experiences we are introduced to the conditions of various population groups. The central figure in the portrayal of historical figures is the politician Orla Lehmann.

The young talented composer Ole Sand and his wife, the operetta actress Alice Sand, live a very stormy marriage. Due to Ole's bohemian, restless lifestyle, it is shipwrecked. Alice meets the extremely elegant businessman Christoffer Martensen, whom she marries in a small idyllic village church. He casually tells his future bride that he has read that the expression Tobiasnätter dates back to the Middle Ages, and that in this way one paid tribute to one's bride by being as chaste as the prophet Tobias was in the first three days of marriage. Their marriage also remains so, one day slipping away after another, triviality is taking the life of Alice.
