The priest on Snarø, Adam Valerius, is a widower for three years, and the young ladies in the parish are queuing up to become the next priest's wife. A large Danish provincial town in the year 1888. Headmaster Wang's wife needs recreation, and the kind headmaster sends her and his youngest daughter Emma to Fanø. In his solitude, he delves into his youth memories and invents, among other things, a "Nordic tragedy", which he wrote during his student days and gave the proud title "Erik Ejegod's Pilgrimage". A theatre director encourages the headmaster to have the play performed at the theatre.

This film could easily be a true story taken from contemporary Denmark. It is a typical Tuesday morning: stormy weather, slush, and bitter cold. Two young women are cycling to work. They make an unpleasant discovery: they find a dead man on a bench in the park.

Peter West goes to Copenhagen to see if he can make a living as a painter. He is quickly accepted into the circle of young artists in the city. He quickly produces many paintings, but he cannot sell a single one. Susan, a young female journalist, is in love with Peter and decides to help him. In 1516, King Christian II, on the advice of his Dutch-born mother Sigbrit, summoned 80 members from Holland and let them settle in St. Magleby and the surrounding area with the obligation that they would "supply Copenhagen Castle with the necessary roots and onions".
