A heavyweight bout between former UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos and former WSOF Heavyweight Champion Blagoy Ivanov served as the event headliner.

UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Bigfoot 2 was a mixed martial arts event held on May 25, 2013, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event was a rematch between former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez and Antônio Silva. In their first encounter at UFC 146 a year earlier, Velasquez defeated Silva via first-round TKO.

The event was expected to be headlined by a 145 lbs UFC Featherweight Championship bout between current champion José Aldo and top contender Conor McGregor. Aldo pulled out of the bout and a interim championship bout between Chad Mendes and McGregor took place at this event. The UFC received official medical confirmation from several doctors that Aldo did not have a broken rib as he claimed and the biggest problem was the weight cutting process being complicated by the injury. This was confirmed when a release of an Xray tied to an old injury was released by Aldo's camp. UFC Fight Night 31: Fight For The Troops 3 was a mixed martial arts event held on November 6, 2013 at Fort Campbell in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Featured on the card were several United States Armed Forces military veterans including Tim Kennedy, Liz Carmouche, Colton Smith and Neil Magny.

UFC on Fox 12: Lawler vs. Brown was a mixed martial arts event held on July 26, 2014, at SAP Center in San Jose, California. The event was headlined by a welterweight bout between Matt Brown and Robbie Lawler. UFC president Dana White subsequently announced that the winner of the main event would receive a title shot against UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks.

UFC on Fox 25: Weidman vs Gastelum was a mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship held on July 22, 2017 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The event was headlined by a middleweight bout between former UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman and The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen middleweight winner Kelvin Gastelum.[

UFC on Fox 27: Jacaré vs. Brunson 2 was a mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship held on January 27, 2018, at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. A middleweight rematch between former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Ronaldo Souza and Derek Brunson served as the event headliner. The pairing met previously in August 2012 under the Strikeforce banner with Souza winning the fight via knockout in the first round.
