Young children have adventures in a fantasy world.

Emil's reputation for being a troublemaker makes the Svensson family's neighbours take up a collection for sending the boy off to America. But even if he among other unfortunate mishaps causes his father to get stuck in the outhouse window and get bitten by crawfish, all is forgotten when he skillfully wins the family a free horse. And when Alfred the farmhand gets seriously ill, Emil puts his own life on the line, venturing into a snow storm to get his best friend to a doctor before it is too late.

The children of Seacrow Island take a public ferry to visit a relative only to find that she has went to hospital. When they try to row back home they lose the oars and must take refuge on a desolate island. 4-year-old Skrallan is the first to discover that two colorful smugglers are hiding on the island.

Dr. Ernst Botman, a UNESCO nutrition specialist is sent to the islands of French Polynesia to investigate suspected cases of starvation. His family, including his wife, elderly mother and teenages Villervalle and Lenalisa, insists on coming along. Thus, they embark on the adventure of a lifetime.
