Anatoliy Trifonov returns home after army service. He meets Raya, chairman's niece, who falls in love, but life takes its own course.

The most famous work of the remarkable classic of Finnish literature Hella Wuolijoki is the saga of the Niskavuori family, consisting of five plays. The first of them, *"The Young Mistress of Niskavuori"*, which reflects the Finnish national character, tells the story of love, changes in life, disappointments, and views on morality through the eyes of straightforward, stubborn people from the countryside who must adapt to new circumstances. The action takes place in 1880.

This play is one of the repertory plays of Russian theater – in the first year of production (1878) it was on the stage of seventy provincial theaters. The main interest of the audience was the triangular relationship conceived according to the plot as the basis of a dramatic intrigue.

Vera Matveeva used to be a schoolteacher, but now she is retired and lives with her granddaughter Elizaveta. Looking at her grandmother's photos of her students, the girl notices a smiling boy in one of them. The third boy in the fifth row was Vanya Belov. Her grandmother told her granddaughter many stories about his jokes and pranks. And Liza liked the boy. The girl sensed something in him that her teacher did not remember: Ivan Belov became a hero and died a brave death in 1945. The television film "Third in the Fifth Row" is based on the novel of the same name by Anatoly Alexin.

The action takes place in Moscow, in the 70s. The characters have not seen each other for many years, but now they have met and are reminiscing about their youth, when they were students at the institute, jazz enthusiasts, and known as stylists.

Faina got married shortly before the war. She is raising her daughter on her own, remaining faithful to her husband, who was killed in the war.
