The Lord returns home to his estate after a stay abroad. The strongman and exuberant person he was has been peeled out of him. He has good manners but is devoid of manliness and human courage.

Even the greatest screenwriters suffer from writer’s block, and the only cure is an impromptu trip to Paris. And so, comedy writer Jonas Lenner flees the suffocating monotony of home. Jonas tells his wife that he is going to visit head teacher Mikkelsen, an old – and fictitious – friend in Springfield. But of course she learns the truth yet says nothing. The king's presence, his courtier Poul Flemming, who loves Elisabeth Munk, is to be the king's deputy at the wedding. However, the king hears rumors that the sheriff Albert Ebbesen has often been seen at Elverhøj with an elf girl, and when Ebbesen now arrives, he must explain away his secret meetings with the elf girl to the king.

After his father's will stipulates he must marry Bella Wilfer to inherit his fortune, John Harmon fakes his death to avoid the marriage and the threats on his life. He returns as John Rokesmith and becomes the secretary for the Boffins, who inherit Harmon's estate following his alleged death.

Christmas at an old rectory in the countryside – it's Christmas! And the three student brothers, "Gamle", "Corpus Juris" and Nicolai, are delighted to receive an invitation to spend Christmas with the priest in Nøddebo. The fact that there are also a couple of young daughters in the rectory naturally makes it all even more enjoyable. It's the first time Nicolai has gone along, so he knows nothing about his older brothers' infatuation with the two girls and falls head over heels for them, assuming that they can't handle his charm either. Things don't quite go his way now, because he finds himself pursued everywhere by the anything but pretty Maldrubine, whose warmest interest is the pleasures of the table.

Mr Tipp, a landowner, is on his way to the city to have a serious word with his nephew Peter, who lives wildly beyond his means. On board the train Mr Tipp meets his childhood sweetheart, the widow Topp. His feelings are rekindled and reciprocated. Arriving in Copenhagen, the pair agree to meet again and then go home to their respective children. Mrs Topp quickly discovers that her daughter, Musse, has recently become romantically attached to someone, and so too has Mr Tipp’s nephew Peter.
