Buenos Aires, November 2001. Argentina is embroiled in crisis, with the Peso plunging deeper and deeper. Julio Färber, the charismatic bandoneon player of the 'Vecinos de Pompeya', a five-piece working-class tango band, is trying to keep his head above water, but every month he is earning less and less from their gigs as well as from the traditional shoe shop he inherited from his father. At the very moment he takes the decision to leave his beloved Buenos Aires forever, it clearly appears that life is conspiring against him: overnight, the government freezes all bank accounts in the whole country, preventing Julio from purchasing the flight tickets and sparking violent protests throughout the town. And Mariela, a witty young woman and feisty cab driver, bumps into his car at full speed, damaging Julio's last possession of value before stealing his heart.

Buenos Aires, 1880. A journalist interviews Manuel Esteban Corvalán, one of the last living men who crossed the Andes in 1817 with José de San Martín, during the Argentinian and Chilean wars of independence, as one of his secretaries, when he was only 15 years old.

A junior screenwriter called Juan Garofalo is hired by film director Samuel Goldszer to write his new film: a gangster movie set in Buenos Aires. In each meeting, the filmmakers create a story that takes place in an imaginary Pompeya neighborhood. So the characters are born: Dylan, the brutal hero of the underworld, Timmy, his disturbed, deaf-mute brother, and Lana, the femme fatale who begins the love triangle. But Pompeya hides a secret and is disputed by the Russian and Korean mafia, and Dylan is caught in a sequence of bloody crimes. Dylan fights for survival while Juan, his creator, lives with greed and misery the experience of an imaginary system of evil powers. And when pure fiction and reality are completely corrupted, the unexpected happens.

Daniel is a journalist who is commissioned to write an article based on a photograph of a presumed suicide. As he begins his investigation, he meets Marcela, the enigmatic photographer assigned to him as a colleague, with whom he has never had a relationship before, and with whom he slowly begins to fall in love.
