Matricule 33

In 1917, a French deserter entered the service of German counterintelligence, but Villard (number 33) was a real French spy. Discovered, he is saved by a German spy who betrays her country for love.

Gossette

In Gossette (1923), Dulac experimented with and designed a number of special lenses and prisms to produce a variety of effects and multiply the expressive means which translate the characters' visions and mental states. She also reversed class and gender roles, as she made the female character Gossette come to the aid of Phillipe de Savières, falsely accused of murder, in order to save his name.

Lilac

Also known as Lilac, this early Anatole Litvak-directed talkie was based on a play by Tristan Bernard and Charles Henry Hirsch. The story bears traces of the Bertold Brecht-Weill piece The Threepenny Opera, with heroine Lilac (Marcelle Romeo) consorting with the criminal scum of Paris. Lilac falls in love with a handsome detective (Andre Luguet), but he doesn't let his emotions stand in the way of his duty, and in the end he reluctantly turns her over to the authorities. At $120,000, Coeur de Lilas was one of the most expensive movies to come out of France in 1931, but it more than made back its cost at the box-office.

We Are Not Children

In the spring of 1913, Jean Servin, a son of a family, became friends with Roberte, a little midinette. He leaves her a few months later to marry Cécile Breton. The years go by. Jean becomes an important businessman. One evening, he meets Roberte, who has become the wife of a wealthy American. She does not love her husband any more than he loves his wife. They recall their memories. They seem to still love each other. They plan to rebuild their lives. Together, they will spend a few days in Dieppe, as they did in the past after their first meeting. They feel so different from what they were twenty years ago that they understand that the past cannot live again.

A Dog That Pays Off

Josyane Plaisir, a rather idle singer, who is waiting for the man of her heart,handsome and rich if possible, accepts the offer of a dog handler. The clever man has worked out a scheme to snare rich men. The trick is simple: "Pantoufle", the little dog he lets for 5,000 francs a week, will run off, climb into a luxurious car with only one man inside and "retrieve" him to Josyane, since her address is stuck to the dog's collar. René, the first man who rings her door-bell, is single (or nearly so!), good-looking but ... broke.

Train de plaisir

Marguerite and Verdurin, both employed in l'Atout Prix, a store run by Prosper Biscoton, would like to take a vacation at the beach, but they need more money than they earn. They decide to trick their boss into paying for the trip by pretending Marguerite is interested in him. Biscoton falls in the trap and puts himself in a difficult position with his own wife.

After squandering his family's fortune, Richard d'Argental, a young marquis, is forced to sell his manor to a young widow, Sylvie. Things get worse for Richard when he finds himself accused of a crime he did not commit. But posing as a butler, Richard manages to be hired by Sylvie so he can hide out in his former property. Soon, love is born between the mistress and her servant.

A young student breaks off her engagement after her late mother leaves her with a baby she had with a stranger. But the baby's father returns and claims it. The young girl, her life shattered, tries to commit suicide but her fiancé, who has never stopped loving her, arrives in time.

The Champion Cook

Le Cordon Bleu doesn't refer to a ham-and-veal delicacy, though there is plenty of ham in this Gallic comedy. The scene is a posh Parisian hotel-restaurant, which ends up a hotbed of infidelity and mistaken identity. Hotel cook Regina is romantically involved with her boss Octave, the husband of Irma. Mistaken for another woman, Irma is passionately pursued by Bernereau, whose wife gets involved with someone else's husband, whose wife gets involved with.
