It is a girl again, but she is given a male name, Ahmed and grows up like a boy. When Ahmed is 21, he is in an identity crisis: he wants to shave, leave a mustache and take his niece to wife. In the meantime, Ahmed's father is dying and wants to sail to heaven. He calls to Ahmed and calls her a female name Zahra and gives her freedom so that she can go out.

The miseries of alcoholism, both for the alcoholic and anyone close to him, are the focus of this routine story about Mathilde, a devoted wife, and her husband Pierre, who is addicted to the bottle. The opening scene is at a New Year's party where Pierre disappears, and Mathilde starts remembering their life together in flashbacks that tell the whole story. Mathilde is ever-suffering, and Pierre is on the whole revolting, so why she hung in there for so long is hopefully made clear in these flashbacks.

Told by Colette, the famous woman of letters, her tumultuous life, from her childhood, her works, her loves and her scandals, her cats until the 1950s, a few years before her death in Paris in 1954.
