Simone Melamed

A deep dive into the world of Luiz de Freitas (better known as Mr. Wonderful), Brazil’s first Black fashion designer. Born in Pau Grande, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro state, he defied conventions and revolutionized Brazilian menswear with his unique personality, his brand, and his fashion shows.

Inspired by the phrase of the American activist Angela Davis – “When the black woman moves, the whole structure of society moves with her” -, the documentary tells the story of three black women whose personal trajectories are intertwined with laws that transformed their lives and those of countless Brazilian citizens.

Since samba emerged in Rio de Janeiro, the presence of women has been fundamental to its creation, maintenance and perpetuation to this day. Muses, pastors, aunts, composers, dancers, godmothers, carnival dancers, mulatas, performers and even as workers, they form a panel of colors, feelings and sounds in the representation of this culture. This film takes a brief look at the history of some of these women, honoring and recognizing their strength.
